The law commission is set to recommend legalizing cricket betting and gambling. But at the same time they want to bring a stringent national law to strictly regulate both the betting on sports and gambling.

The draft report prepared by the law commission to be submitted to the government and the Supreme Court has suggested these recommendations. The panel believes that the lawful but strict regulation of gambling and betting would help curb illegal practices that generate black money. In the commission’s estimate unregulated gambling and betting generating about Rs. 13,000 crore annually. This is a major source of black money which is often used to fund terrorist and other anti- national activities. The commission pointed out the additional revenue of the government and the employment generation as other advantages.

The Supreme Court has mandated the law commission to examine whether betting on cricket should be legalized. The Supreme Court was forced to do so after the T20 league was hit by 2013 spot fixing and betting scandal.
