To ensure safety of passengers, the Rail Ministry has decided to put the entire rail network under CCTV coverage in the days to come, Railways Minister Piyush Goel said here on Saturday.
'After the incident of Elphinston Road station in Mumbai, around 2800 escalators will be installed at various busy railway stations, out of which 372 will be installed at different stations of Mumbai sub-urban lines,' Goel said.
'It will take three to four years to get these escalators installed, but we will first focus on Mumbai as there is a huge footfall the sub-urban network,' he added.
The Indian Railways has taken many decisions for the betterment of system during a brain-storming session of a Conclave designed to break silos (sampark), improve co-ordination (samanvay) and find solutions (samvad) to the critical issues facing the Ministry, Goel said.
It has been decided that the Stations and foot-over bridges are issues of security, not facility. For new construction and maintenance of these infrastructures, the decisions will be taken at local level to avoid delay, he added.
