The revenue generation of stations is not the sole criteria for allocation of funds to the stations, but the footfall and strategically important stations will also also be considered for allocation, Railways Minister Piyush Goel said here on Saturday.

''Earlier, revenue earning was the sole criteria for grading of railway stations, but now onwards, the importance of places or strategic location in the rail network will also be a criteria,'' Goel said, talking to the media after a brain-storming conclave of the Rail Ministry.

Citing an example of Ajmer Sharif or Sabarimala station, which may not be earning much but these definitely need more fund to have better passengers' amenities and under new scheme, these stations will be getting substantially more funds, he added.
