Najeeb Kunduvail Padinharanhil, a 22-year-old student from Malappuram who was doing M Tech at the Vellore Institute of Technology has joined the IS, the Tamil Nadu police has said, quoting its Kerala counterpart.
Najeeb, who did his B Tech in Dubai when his father was working there, joined VIT on July 12 to do M Tech, but was not staying in the hostel but in a house is in Vellore town. Shortly thereafter, he disappeared.
The State police registered a person missing on an alert from the Malappuram police to which his mother complained on Aug 24. Najeeb has since telephoned her and told her that he has joined the IS.
Police believe he reached Dubai via Hyderabad and Teheran and from there crossed over to Syria to join the IS.
Police are investigating how he was radicalised to join the terrorist outfit that was banned in India in December 2014.
Najeeb is among the number of Muslim youths from India who have joined the IS to fight for an Islamic State.
Earlier, a group of Muslims from Ramanathapuram were arrested after they posted on the social media their photos with T shirts bearing IS insignia. Though IS has sympathisers in Tamil Nadu also, so far no one has joined it.
Najeeb is the first student from Tamil Nadu to join this outfit.
