BJP destroyed peace in J&K: Rahul in Berkley

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi today accused the BJP led government at the Centre of 'destroying peace' in the Kashmir valley, thus undoing the efforts of the previous Congress government to restore normalcy there.

Addressing students and intellectuals at University of California in Berkley, Gandhi refuted the oft propagated view by the BJP of him being a reluctant politician. On his efforts to carry out a reorganisation in the Congress party, Gandhi said he was trying to make young people and senior leaders work together.

Accusing the BJP led government at the Centre of destroying peace in the Kashmir valley, Gandhi said ,'We worked silently for nine years to ensure peace in Jammu and Kashmir . The UPA 2 broke the back of terrorism. However, the BJP government destroyed it in 30 days.' Refuting the oft propagated view of him being a 'reluctant politician', he said ,' being a reluctant politician is a perspective from 1000 BJP followers sitting on machines only spreading rumours about me.’

On his efforts for reorganisation in the Congress, he said, 'Young people should be pushed forward. However, there is tremendous talent in the party among seniors. I am trying to make both work together.' Questioning the foreign policy of the NDA government, he said, 'The UPA's design was to have relations with countries like the US, Russia and Iran. However, the current balance is making India vulnerable.'

Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani said Rahul complained about Narendra Modi at a speech abroad as he had no back up in India. “ A failed dynast spoke of failed political journey”, she said. As the Congress scion defended dynasty politics, she said there is no place for dynasty in a democracy like India.

On Rahul’s remarks that peace was destroyed in Jammu and Kashmir, Irani said the Nehru-Gandhis left behind challenges in the state.
