Kohima, Dec 23: The Assamese community of Dimapur, under the aegis of Dimapur Assamese Samaj has organized a sit-in protest sit-in protest against the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 at Dimapur Namghar Campus yesterday. The protest was attended by Assamese community from both upper and lower Assam including Barak valley residing in Dimapur representing various religious communities and tribes of Assam came out in large numbers to protest against the “draconian and discriminatory” Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA) passed by the parliament. The protesters took to naam kirtan, a traditional Assamese prayer characterised by beats of dhols (drums) and cymbals, to seek divine intervention and make Prime Minister Narendra Modi wiser to have a better understanding of the implications of CAA and how it was detrimental to Assam and the entire Northeast. Speaking to this reporter at the venue, Dimapur Namghar Trust Board secretary Deep Borkotoky claimed that the Assamese Samaj of Dimapur and the community residing in Nagaland were against CAA. He emphasised that, apart from exercising the democratic right to protest, it was imperative that the general public was sensitised on the legislation. Meanwhile, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) also organized a peaceful public rally at Khermahal Police Point in Dimapur against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). Addressing the rally, NPCC president, K Therie forewarned that the CAA which grants Indian citizenship to non-muslims of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh if implemented will inundate the North East Region. He also pointed out that with the implementation of NRC in Assam; more than 19 lakhs Assamese people are already in detention camps. People from all walks of life attended the rally held at Dimapur. They were seen holding placards, raising anti-CAA-NRC slogans like as “99% Indians rejects CAA and NRC,” “Give us employment, not CAA,” “Nagaland Government mukh nai?” “Error 404, Democracy not found,” “Nazis are here,” “Sorry Assam, we are late” and others.
