Shillong, May 31 : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Sunday visited the flood hit West Garo Hills district to take stock of the situation. Heavy rainfall following cloudburst had wreaked havoc in Raksam Gre and Tikrikilla areas, causing flash floods affecting over 1600 people and destroyed houses, market places, educational institutions and agricultural lands.
The AMPT road and three bridges along the lifeline of Phulbari -Tikililla – Raksamgre, Rajabala and Selsella, were washed away by the high current of the water. “We have come here to survey the damaged and meet the affected people,” Sangma, who was accompanied by senior district officials, said.
The chief minister informed that he has asked the Public Works Department to complete the renovation work of the damaged AMPT bridge at the earliest. “They have given us a commitment that within the next few weeks we should be able to ply vehicles through this bridge,” Sangma added. (UNI)
