Shillong, Mar 10 : The opposition Congress has recommended the name of its former party legislator Kennedy Khyriem as the candidate for the upcoming election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat, Congress sources said on Tuesday. The election will be held on March 26.
Sources said that the Congress has recommended the name of Khyriem to the party high command after members of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee deliberated the matter on Tuesday at the Congress’ state headquarters. “We have recommended the name Kennedy to the party high command as our party candidate to contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections,” the Congress leader said requesting anonymity.
Earlier, the Congress had approached United Democratic Party General Secretary Jemino Mawthoh to contest the election and assured him of their support. In the 60-member Meghalaya House assembly, the Congress has 19 legislators. The Congress has Wansuk Syeim as the member of Rajya Sabha from the state for two terms. Syiem’s term as Rajya Sabha MP will end on April 12. The BJP-backed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has declared National People’s Party (NPP) Meghalaya state president, Dr Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi as its consensus candidate to Rajya Sabha seat.
The NPP, which is leading the MDA government has 21 members with the support of its partners, the UDP – 7, BJP – 2, People’s Democratic Front (PDF) – 4, Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) – 2, NCP – 1, and three Independents. (UNI)
