President arrives in Meghalaya

Shillong, Nov 4: President Ram Nath Kovind arrived here on Sunday on a two-day maiden visit to Meghalaya.

He was received at the Advanced Landing Ground by the Governor Tathagata Roy, Health and Family Welfare Minister A.L. Hek and senior state government officials. The President was given gurad of honour by the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma called on President Ram Nath Kovind along with his wife Mehtab A. Sangma at the Raj Bhavan, where Governor Tathagata Roy hosted a dinner in the honour of the President.

Mr Kovind will address the XXVI convocation of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong on Monday.

Kanubhai Hasmukhbhai Tailor, a physically disabled social worker from Gujarat and the founder of the Disable Welfare Trust of India, will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) in recognition for his outstanding contributions towards the development of the physically challenged people.

In 2011, Kanubhai was honoured with India’s fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri. Meanwhile, police have made elaborate security arrangements for Kovind’s visit. The police and para-military personnel have been posted on all major thoroughfares and patrolling has been intensified throughout the state, officials said. (UNI)
