Tura, Meghalaya, Feb 12: An undertrial prisoner on Monday died of an illness in a hospital in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district, police said on Tuesday.
Tengkan N Marak, who was arrested on February 4 in connection with an arson case in Dalu area, had complained on uneasiness and was shifted to a hospital on February 5.
Superintendent of Police in-charge West Garo Hills, Dr M.G.R. Kumar said Marak of Baburambil village was arrested after a non-bailable warrant of arrest was issued against him allegedly for rioting, arson, damage to property and unlawful gathering.
“He was arrested and produced before Court in connection to case GR233/12 on an NWBA and was sent to judicial custody. He complained of sickness and was admitted to hospital on February 5 and died in the UTP ward due to sickness on Tuesday,” Kumar said.
Kumar said a report on the same has been submitted to Araimile Beat House by jail authorities and a magisterial inquest has been done.
The dead body has been handed over to the family after autopsy and formalities. (UNI)
