Shillong, Feb 8: Seven people have been arrested in connection with the Meghalaya Teachers’ Eligibility Test (MTET) paper leak while the main accused has gone underground, police said on Friday.
However, Congress legislator Azad Zaman questioned the police investigation after the arrests were made stating that those arrested were innocent and had even reported the matter to the invigilators.
But police rubbished the allegation saying that the arrests were made after a proper inquiry.
“The seven accused were arrested after proper investigation and found that their motive was to pass the exam through cheating as well as distributing the same. We have not arrested anyone who reported the matter to invigilators,” Superintendent of Police in-charge West Garo Hill’s district, Dr MGR Kumar said.
He said efforts are on to arrest the prime accused, who has gone into hiding, in the case.
In a statement issued here, Zaman said that some of the students arrested were provided with the paper by mistake.
“After sitting for the exam and confirming the authenticity of the leak, the students even reported the matter to the invigilator. Worryingly, despite the paper leak, the authorities continued with the exam,” the Congress legislator said. (UNI)
