Almost a month after tragedy struck, 15 miners in an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya are still stuck inside. For the past 27 days members of the National Disaster Rescue Force, the State Disaster Rescue Force as well as the Indian Navy divers have been at work to save the lives of these miners. When reports last came in they were working hard, struggling to pump out water from the mine in order to facilitate rescue operations to reach the men inside.
It is understood that six more pumps have reached the spot and all efforts are being made to lower the water level in the main shaft of the mine. The miners have been trapped inside the 370 feet deep illegal mine in Lumthari village since December 13, 2018.
All efforts have so far gone in vain. This incident has drawn the attention of the Supreme Court which has expressed its displeasure at the delay in rescue operations. Further, it has asked the Meghalaya Government what it has done so far.
