Imphal, Jan 31: People of Manipur today rose against the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill by staging protests rally, sit in protests and shut down.
The protests began last night with thousands of women coming out in the streets by holding torches in their hands.
Manipur People Against CAB (MANPAC) formed by 66 organisations of the state imposed a state wide 24-hour general strike from last midnight. Life came to a complete halt today due to the strike. Thousands of people came out and staged sit in protests near the roads shouting slogans against the Bill. Security arrangements were taken up and security personnel put up iron barricades around important places.
All educational institutes were closed down, intra and inter state passenger services were also cancelled. Nine parties, CPI, CPI(M), RSP, AIFB, NCP, AAP, BSP, JD-S and PRJA would also take out torch rallies later this evening.
Most political leaders have left to New Delhi to meet their central leaders to discuss the political development. (UNI)
