Thane, May 19 : Around 56,000 migrant workers have departed from this district, either through Shramik Special trains or buses, till now, stated Collector Rajesh Narvekar on Tuesday. Among them, 21,475 have been ferried through 17 trains, the other 34,485 were transported in 1,553 buses, he mentioned.
The highest 10,632 workers, who boarded the Shramik Special, hailed from Bihar followed by Rajasthan (3,494), Uttar Pradesh (2,833), Madhya Pradesh (1,652), Jharkhand (1,500) and Orissa (1,364). The Collector affirmed that owing to the administration's efforts, the number of migrants setting off on arduous foot journeys has reduced significantly. The respective states are being contacted for permission to send the remaining men to their hometowns, he added. (UNI)
