Kolhapur, May 14 : Maharashtra Election Commission(EC) has given a nod for electing sarpanchs and their deputies in the villages where these constitutional posts are lying vacant, informed Rural Development Minister Hasan Mushrif on Thursday.
Owing to the COVID-19 crisis, the electoral body suspended all proceedings related to general elections as well as bypolls of the local self-government. Prior to the suspension order issued on March 17, there were instances where the village heads tendered their resignations hence these posts have been lying vacant since then. Considering the problem, the EC permitted the filling of these posts following which the government has directed the district collectors to oversee the process. The collectors have been asked to adhere to social distancing and other COVID-19 checks while holding the meet for the process, Minister Mushrif added . (UNI)
