Thane, May 5 : As many as 95 new COVID-19 cases were detected in this district in the last 24 hours taking the pandemic tally to 1,278 while 33 individuals have succumbed to the contagion till now, stated an official report on Tuesday. In the limits of Thane and Navi Mumbai civic bodies, now there are 412 and 348 cases, respectively, while there are 213 and 181 infected individuals in the respective suburbs of Kalyan-Dombivili and Mira-Bhayandar.
The remaining cases are from Thane Rural (47), Badlapur (37), Bhiwandi (19), Ambernath (11) and ten from Ulhasnagar. The new cases, reported from Kalyan-Dombivili and Navi Mumbai, include policemen, doctors and a lab technician. Meanwhile, two persons and a newborn were given discharge as they were cured, stated Kalyan-Dombivili civic body spokeswoman Madhuri Phopale. In a span of two days, around eight cases have been found in rural parts of this district hence worrying the administration and health personnel.
Talking to UNI, District Health Officer Dr Manish Renge explained that the reason as why the cases are on rise in rural areas is that the municipal and police personnel go for work to Mumbai and upon return carry the pandemic with them. Giving an instance, he further said that eight policemen have earlier contracted the contagion in Badlapur, and added that the Health Department is putting its best foot forward for containing the pandemic spread in villages. In distant Palghar district, two new cases were detected hence increasing the tally to 179 besides 10 fatalities. (UNI)
