Palghar, Apr 20: Acting upon the Opposition BJP's demand, Maha Vikas Aghadi government on Monday ordered a high-level probe in the recent mob lynching incident in which three persons, including a senior citizen, were brutally killed in front of police in Dahanu taluka here on Sunday.
The gruesome episode has gathered much political steam as the Leaders of Opposition, Devendra Fadnavis and Pravin Darekar, have not only condemned the killings but also expressed concern for law and order situation in the State. Terming the incident as inhumane, former CM Fadnavis demanded a probe into it, as the victims were assaulted in front of police, and added that the culprits should be punished sternly. Echoing the same feelings as of his peer Fadnavis, Mr Darekar averred that the Home Minister Anil Deshmukh should immediately tender resignation taking the moral responsibility of the incident.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray tweeted that the accused have been held, and those guilty in this heinous and shameful act will not be spared. On the intervening night of April 16-17, an armed mob of around 500 people lynched Chikne Maharaj Kalpavrukshagiri (70), Sushil GiriMaharaj, (35) and Nilesh Telgade (30) suspecting them to be criminals. The victims were on their way to Gujarat when the incident occurred upon reaching the Gadchinchle village within the limits of the Kasa Police Station in Dahanu.
Registering three FIRs in the case, Kasa police arrested 101 persons and a local court sent all the accused to remand till April 30 while nine other juveniles were sent to Bhiwandi remand home. Commenting on the abhorrent epidsode, Collector Kailas Shinde remarked that the role of the police in the case will also be probed whereas it would be enquired as how the trio were travelling despite the lockdown in place.
