Aurangabad, Apr 19: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Adv Laxman Patil-Pradhan on Sunday urged the Centre to provide funds so that the state government can waive off energy bills of poor customers, whose consumption is below 100 units per month.
"The state government does not have sufficient funds, but has made a commitment to the customers. So the Centre should immediately help by releasing emergency COVID-19 fund, received from various factions of society", the NCP leader told UNI.
As the lockdown is currently in place, Patil-Pradhan averred that the daily wage workers and people below poverty line are facing severe hardships due to which they are not in a position to pay monthly residential electricity bills.
He said that the state government has set up a committee for checking out feasibility reports and will submit it within three months.
"If the state government waits till the Committee Report comes, it will be too late, as the committee is expected to submit it in May end or June", he said.
"Till then from where these peoples will pay the energy bill ?", he questioned.
The 21-day lockdown due to novel coronavirus, which was set to end on April 14, but was extended till May 3 has badly affected the state's economy.
nCoV has already claimed more than 500 lives throughout the country while the total number of infected cases have surpassed the 15000-mark.(UNI)
