Kolhapur, Feb 10 : Congress candidate Nilofr Ashikin Ajrekar on Monday was elected as the mayor of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) by 48 votes as opposition party Bharatiya Janata party (BJP)-Tararani Aghadi members boycotted the election protesting against limitless "Khandoli" (cut to pieces) of 'mayoral' post by Congress-Nationalist Congress Party ruling Agadi.
This election was necessitated as Mayor Adv Surmanajiri Latkar recently tendered her resignation only two months after her appointment. Meanwhile, BJP-Tararani Aghadi members alleged that this kind of change every two-three month by the Congress-NCP aghadi adversely affects the development of the city and that is why the BJP boycotted this election at eleventh hour.
So, though Archana Umesh Powar filed her nomination for the post from the saffron party, could not withdraw her nomination papers.
As per the agreement between Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in KMC, the post of Mayor will be held by corporates of each party alternatively after the resignation of Ms Latkar.
NCP corporator Shama Mulla, who was arrested under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), was also present here under tight security following the court's special permission. (UNI)
