Banned gutkha worth Rs 2.53 crore seized, 2 arrested

Thane, Feb 8 : Banned gutkha worth Rs 2.53 crore has been seized and two people have been arrested in this connection in Bhiwandi town of this district of Maharashtra.

The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department officials and the police personnel carried out a joint raid in godowns in the area and seized banned gutkha and prohibited food articles worth Rs 2.53 crore on Friday.

Joint Commissioner of FDA Thane, Shivaji Desai and DCP, Bhiwandi Zone, Rajkumar Shinde said two of the eight people involved in the crime have been arrested.

Vehicles worth Rs 14 lakhs were also seized. The arrested were identified as Nagendra Kumar Yadav, 27 and Vilas Mandavkar, 28, both loaders of the contraband. An FIR has been registered under sections 328,188,272 rw 34 of the IPC. (UNI)
