Pune, Jan 15 : The Army's Southern Command (SC) on Wednesday commemorated the 72nd Army Day with a solemn wreath laying ceremony at the National War Memorial here. The event was graced by SC General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Lieutenant General S K Saini who is decorated with Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.
The SC, responsible for guarding the western and southern borders, has taken part in all major military operations since independence, release said. It has also provided succor to the citizens in times of natural calamities and other disasters.
On this day, the SC's brave officers and soldiers resolved to uphold the glorious traditions of the Indian Army and to preserve the integrity and security of the nation. Army Day is celebrated on January 15 every year in recognition of Field Marshal K M Cariappa's taking over in 1949 as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Army from Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander.
