New Delhi, Dec 31: Just as Congress Minister Aslam Shaikh has made news after an old letter of his seeking clemency for Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon went viral, the BJP on Tuesday stepped up attack against Shiv Sena chief and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

"Uddhav, ajab tujhe sarkar.....(Mr Uddhav Thackeray, your Chief Minister is really surprising)," tweeted BJP leader and a former lawmaker from Mumbai Kirit Somaiya. In the missive along with an audio-video capsule, Mr Somaiya says that in 2015 Congress legislator Aslam Shaikh had demanded clemency for 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon and the assembly proceedings had to be adjourned number of times following pandemonium created by BJP and Sena MLAs.

"The same Aslam Shaikh has now become a patriot for you...," Mr Somaiya, who represented Mumbai North-East in the 13th and the 16th Lok Sabha, questions Sena chief. Uddhav Thackeray last month parted ways from BJP and quit NDA alliance to join hands with the Congress and NCP to form government in the state. Speaking to reporters after his old letter went viral on social media, Mr Shaikh, represents Malad assembly constituency in Mumbai, said, "Since BJP has been dethroned and is out of power; it is misleading people on various issues." Mr Shaikh was inducted into the Maharashtra Cabinet on Monday.

It is worth mentioning that along with its erstwhile ally BJP, the Shiv Sena too had welcomed the death sentence for Memon. In July 2015, Shaikh had written to the then President Pranab Mukherjee seeking mercy for Memon. Memon was, however, hung in a Nagpur jail on July 30, 2015. (UNI)
