Thane, Oct 27 : A man and other three members of a family have been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for five years by the district court in case of abetment to suicide of his wife in 2013, based on deposition by a teenage girl.
The prosecutor told the court that the victim, Indumati Kothari (38, wife of a jeweler) committed suicide by hanging herself in her house at Nerul in Navi Mumbai in 2013 due to constant harassment for dowry by the accused persons, including her husband.
The first information report was filed against her husband Naresh (38), his parents Sukanraj and Muniyaben, and brother Hitesh. During the trial, the daughter of Naresh deposed in the court that her father used to demand dowry from her mother and used to beat her up regularly.
Relying on the deposition of the 13-year-old girl, Judge A S Pandharikar on Friday held the accused guilty under sections 498A and 306 of Indian Penal Code as well as sections 3 and 4 of the Prohibition of Dowry Act and awarded the sentence to them. (UNI)
