Maharashtra Election: BJP’s Pankaja Munde loses to Cousin

Late BJP leader Gopinath Munde’s daughter and Maharashtra Minister for minister of rural development, women and child welfare, Pankaja Munde has been defeated by her cousin at Parli constituency.

Ms Munde, who lost to her cousin and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate, Dhananjay Munde. Ms Munde had been trailing her cousin by some 30,000 votes before the final count was declared.

"I worked for the constituency. Though I was in the government, my struggle for my constituency and people continued. I take responsibility of this defeat," Ms Munde said, PTI reported.

On the last day of campaigning and her fifth rally at Parli, Ms Munde had collapsed while speaking. The BJP may not have it easy in Maharashtra after a lower than expected trends in Haryana. This time, political campaign witnessed hullaballoo after Dhananjay, the leader of opposition in the state legislative council, kicked up a row by allegedly making obscene comments against Pankaja at a campaign rally, resulting in an FIR against him.

Under flak, Dhananjay claimed the video clip, in which he was purportedly heard making the comments against Pankaja, was edited and fake. He said his remarks were "distorted" to project him as a "villain" by his rivals to win elections.
