Thane, Sep 3: A 45-year-old villager from Khadavali of the district was arrested by the district rural police on the alleged charges of pushing his wife into a river, police said on Tuesday.

PI Balaji Phandhare of the Kalyan taluka police station said that an offence under sections 302 and 201 of the IPC has been registered late Monday night against the alleged accused with the Kalyan taluka police station.

According to the police, the accused Dashrath Waghe, resident behind the Gamdevi Mandir pushed his wife into the Bhatsa River late last night at around 11.30 pm.

A local villager saw this alerted the police and the body of the victim, Surekha, 42 was fished out that night itself. The police officer further said that the fight between the couple over drinking of liquor and the wife opposing it lead to the quarrel which resulted in the murder of the tribal village woman the police said.

The body of the victim has been since sent for a postmortem to the government hospital the police added. (UNI)
