Dhule, Maharashtra, Aug 31: The Special District Court here on Saturday convicted 48 accused,including former minister and Shiv Sena leader Suresh Jain as well as former minister and NCP leader Gulabrao Devkar, in the infamous Jalgaon Housing Scam. In his verdict,Judge Srusti Nilkant ordered to arrest all the accused,including Jain and Devkar,and added that the quantum of punishment will be announced later. The Defense Lawyers argued that the accused had nothing to do with the scandal, they were aged now and were suffering from different ailments.
Public Prosecutor Pravin Chavan argued before the court that all the accused corporators committed the conspiracy of scandal. Mr Chavan asserted that why the accused made a resolution when there was no land for housing scheme hence the victims must get their benefits because their hard earned is involved and the accused must be punished. There are 52 accused including former minister Suresh Jain, Gulabrao Devkar, Raja Mayur, Pradeep Raisoni, Jagannath Vani.
Three of the accused have expired whereas one is still absconding. Notably, Rs 29.59 crores was provided to the builders without interest by the ruling party led by Suresh Jain in Jalgaon Municipal Corporation(JMC) after passing resolution in JMC in 1996. When former JMC commissioner Pravin Geddam came to know about the irregularities, he filed a police case. Mr Jain and Mr Deokar have already served jail terms,and are presently out on bail. UNI
