Two-time Palghar MLA Navnitbhai Shah passes away

Thane, Aug 26: A senior socialist leader and freedom fighter Navnitbhai Shah died tonight at 2100 hrs at a private hospital, following a protracted illness. He was born on December 08, 1923 at Valsad. He took part in the freedom struggle in 1942 at Gowalia Tank maidan. He took an active part in the work of the Rashtra Seva Dal in Mumbai between 1943-49. He was elected as the first Sarpanch of palghar in 1952. In 1957 he was elected for the first time as the MLA from Palghar.

He was elected as the first President of the Palghar Panchayat Samiti in 1962. It was in 1962 he was once again elected as the MLA from Palghar. Shah was associated and was on the board of several educational institutions in Palghar. He had taken part and led several agitations for the betterment of the rail services. In the 70’s he started the weekly Palghar Mitra.

In 1982 he set up the NIRID (National Institute of Rural Integrated Development). He was instrumental in making Toddy free of taxes. He was also the trustee of the Adivasi Sahaj Sikshan Parivar at Maswan in Palghar. He tabled the resolution for the composite Maharashtra( Samyukta Maharashtra) His funeral will be held tomorrow at Palghar it was stated by his family members.UNI
