Minister, MLA among thousands demand to save ashram

Thane, Aug 23: Several thousands of people on Thursday participated in the rally organized to save the Sadanand Maharaj Ashram from Tungareshwar from being razed. The rally was organized at the Shirsad Phata on the Mumbai Ahmedabad highway. Those present included devotees and also those from Varkari sect who chanted prayers and rendered religious songs all through the day. Among those present for the rally include the Maharashtra Minister Ravindra Chavan and the Mira Bhayander MLA Narendra Mehta who were prominent among those present both from the BJP.

The SC has directed the Maharashtra Government to raze the Ashram situated on the Tungareshwar hills by August 31. On the directions of the SC the state government has sought time till November for the demolition it was learnt. The forest department has sought assistance from the Municipal Corporation and police and other agencies for the demolition of the Ashram. The Save Sadanand Maharaj Ashram movement has been started by the devotees of the Ashram who have been carrying out repeated activities since the last several months when the issue was racked up following a petition filed by an NGO.
