Thane, Jul 5 : The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) workers on Friday condemned Maharashtra Water Conservation Minister Minister Tanaji Sawant's statement on Ratnagiri's dam breach incident which has claimed 23 lives so far.
Led by NCP Kalwa-Mumbra MLA Jitendra Awhad the party workers walked into the Naupada Police Station and laid down crabs before the ACP and senior cops and appealed them to arrest the creature.
According to the NCP members, the said act was a way of retorting to the minister's statement in which he said that the dam breach occurred following the assembling of crabs around it, as the creature hollowed the structure leading to flood and loss of lives. Mr Awhad called it 'shameless' adding that the Minister made the 'irresponsible' remark so as to protect the local Shiv Sena legislator Sadanand Chavan.
He further said, "There is no sensitivity left out in the government as 23 people have been washed away in the mishap and even now, 10 people have not been traced." "The government claims that crabs have damaged the dam. What could be said about this incompetent government," he questioned.
He alleged that the MLA's brother was the contractor hence the authorities were shying away from arresting him. He fumed that if the authorities don't wish to arrest the contractor then at least the feelings of the victims kin must not be hurt by giving such irresponsible statements. "The local villagers were complaining about the condition of the dam since last two years but the authorities turned a deaf ear to their plea and finally what was feared has happened,"he added.
