New Delhi, May 28 : National Commision for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the suicide of a 26-year-old post-graduate student at a Mumbai hospital at her college hostel over allegedly casteist slurs from seniors.
Expressing serious concern over the incident, NCW in a letter Tuesday said it was "deeply disturbed" by news reports that the deceased Payal Tadvi was harassed by the three doctors as she belonged to a lower caste.

On the basis of a complaint lodged by her parents, the Agripada police have registered a case against the three doctors under section 306 (abetment for suicide) of the Indian penal code (IPC), sections of the SC/ST Atrocities Act, Anti-Ragging Act and Information Technology Act, 2000.

In view of the gravity of the situation, NCW asked the Director, Topiwala National Medical College & BYL Nair Charitable Hospital, Mumbai, where Payal was working, to investigate the matter and send the action taken report to it.

The post-graduate student at the hospital committed suicide by hanging herself at the college hostel. (UNI)
