Drought-hit Aurangabad witnesses series of protests

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, May 28 : Annadata Shetkari Sanghatana(ASS) President Jayaji Suryawanshi Tuesday warned that if the demand to release water from the Jayakwadi dam to Hiradpuri and Aapegaon weirs is not met by tomorrow, he will aggravate the protest subsequently.

Talking to UNI from Paithan town here, Mr Suryawanshi alleged that the Water Resources Ministry is engrossed in political activities and has no time to redress the water-crisis issue.He said, "We have been demanding to release water into the above said weirs since 45 days as there is acute drinking water problem in 70 villages in Paithan taluka of this district."

He further said, "From May 6, we started our agitation in this regard at different places,including the protest held in front of the Jayakwadi dam as well as Godavari Marathawada Irrigation Development Corporation(GMIDC) office here."

Recalling the most recent episode of agitation,he told that a three-hour long ‘Bhajan Aandolan’ was held at the Godavari river basin near Takali Ambad village here on Monday.

Mr Suryawanshi warned that if the Irrigation Department won't release water tomorrow, a sit-in agitation will be staged in front of the GMIDC office.He asserted that even after tomorrow's sit-in,the Irrigation Department doesn't reckon our demand then the agitators will sit in front of the residences of the Department's higher authorities.
