Kolhapur, Jan 23 : The Judicial Magistrate S S Raul on Wednesday sent Amit Ramchandra Digvekar to another six days of police custody in the murder case of Communist Party of India(CPI) senior leader Govind Pansare.
The Special Investigation Team(SIT) detained the 35-year-old accused on January 15 from the Bengaluru Central Prison, where he was serving jail for his alleged involvement in the murders of Dr Narendra Dabholkar and Journalist Gauri Lankesh.
At that instance, the accused Digvekar was remanded to nine-day police custody which expired on January 23.
In his arguments, the Public Prosecutor Shivajirao Rane appealed the court for remanding the accused Digvekar to six-day police custody so the SIT get ample time for investigating the details related to coded words mentioned in a diary passed on to the accused Digvekar by another suspect Amol Kale.
Mr Rane further argued that the SIT has found in its investigation that the accused conducted a recce of the place where Govind Pansare was to be attacked.
Later, the accused held a meeting with the other suspects-Dr Virendra Tawade and Sharad Kalaskar- at the Belgaum ST bus stand, stated Mr Rane.
The Defense Lawyer Sameer Patwardhan took strong objection to the appeal made by the Public Prosecutor Rane.
He said that during the previous nine-day police custody the SIT had adequate time period to investigate the case hence the accused must be sent to magisterial custody. (UNI)
