Bhopal, Aug 25 : The India Meteorological Department(IMD) has issued an ‘intense precipitation’ alert – effective for the next 24 hours – in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani, Alirajpur, Jhabua, Mandsaur, Sehore, Raisen, Harda, Betul and Hoshangabad districts.
The state capital witnessed the second consecutive day of incessant rainfall on Sunday – the figure being approximately four inches in a span of 48 hours. The city received 1,201.2 mm rain this season, which is a whopping 386 mm above normal.
The Water Resources Department opened sluice gates of 20 of 28 major dams. As many as 2,418 cusecs of excess fluid is draining out every second from 16 of 21 gates at Jabalpur’s Bargi Dam. The situation is similar at Itarsi’s Tawa Dam. Consequently, the rise in Narmada’s water level, resulting in district administrations urging residents – on the river’s banks in Mandla, Hoshangabad, Raisen, Khandwa, Khargone and other districts – to exercise caution.
