Temples in Kottayam, Pathanamthitta reopen, moderate turnout of devotees

Kottayam, Jun 10 : Temples under Travancore Devaswom Board in Kottayam and Pathanamthitta, which reopened on Tuesday after a gap of 78 days due to COVID-19 lockdown, witnessed a rather moderate turnout of devotees. Several devotees offered darshan at Mahadeva temples at Thirunakkara, Ettumanoor and Vaikom, sources said on Wednesday.

Around 300 devotees turned up at Sree Parthasarathy temple at Aranmula and about 450 devotees offered prayers at Bhagavathy temple at Malayalappuzha. Sreevallabha temple at Thiruvalla and Mahadevar temples at Kaviyur and Chengannur too witnessed a lean turnout.

The temple authorities had made all arrangements to ensure the physical distancing norms and hygiene of the devotees. Meanwhile, churches under Syro Malankara Church were opened yesterday for daily liturgical service. The Jacobite Syrian church will open its churches attached to the Kollam and Niranam dioceses for Sunday service. The Mar Thoma Syrian church at Malabar and Believers Eastern Church have decided not to open their churches this month. Major churches in Kottayam district including St.George Forane church at Aruvithura and St.Mary's Forane Church at Bharananganam did not open for services in line with a decision by their respective parish committees. The St.Mary's Jacobite Syrian Cathedral at Manarcad will remain closed till June 30. (UNI)
