Wayanad, May 14 : More than 20 cops, including the district police chief, have been put in quarantine after two civil police officers of Mananthavady police station here have been tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday. As part of initiating the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) all persons who were on duty while the two cops were present at various places, as part of their official duty, were sent to nearby lodges and resorts for quarantine.
Health department sources said one among the two police officers who had tested positive on Wednesday had been on duty and went to Bathery police station and Muthanga area, where the DSP and few other senior officials were also present. The health department is trying to map out the contact list of the two cops to contain further spread from their direct and secondary contacts. The two police officers were among the police officials of Mananthavady police station who came in contact with a truck driver who got infected with Coronavirus after he had returned from Koyambedu market in Chennai.
The truck driver had visited the police station on April 28 and May 2 and later he was tested positive for COVID-19. Samples of as many as 28 police officials were collected after they were identified to have come in contact with the driver. However, only two out of the 28 were tested positive. But, all these cops, including the two who had tested positive, were active and on official duty and went to several places along with senior officials even after samples were collected on Monday.
According to reports reaching here the District Superintendent of Police, the Sulthan Bathery Circle Inspector, two sub inspectors and about 18 police personnel of the Mananthavady police station have been put in quarantine. That apart, few cops of the Mananthavady police station has also been put in room quarantine, district health sources said. Mananthavady has since been categorised as a red zone, extra force has been posted at duty points for enforcing hot spot containment. To and fro people movement to the Mananthavady police station has been strictly restricted, health sources added. As part of containing further spread of the virus due to the direct and indirect contacts, the cops tested positive had with their colleagues, the Bathery and Mananthavady courts have been closed on Thursday.
