Kozhikode, Mar 3 : The agitation by the Kerala Students Union (KSU) demanding action against the authorities over the suicide of a third year degree student of the Malabar Christian College here has turned violent on Tuesday and police used water cannons to disburse them. Earlier, the students attacked the police barricades and tried to break them which forced the police to use water cannons.

A third year B Com student, Jaspeeth Singh, was found dead in his residence on Sunday. A native of Punjab, the student is alleged to have committed suicide following a diktat by the college authorities that only those who have a minimum of 75 per cent attendance would be permitted to appear for the examinations.

The boy had committed suicide as he was denied permission to write examination for want of attendance. But his family claims that necessary medical certificates were submitted for his absence. However, the college principal refuted this and said he was only following a directive by the Calicut University on attendance. (UNI)
