Kerala’s 225 tourism accommodation units to be plastic free from Jan 1

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 31: As part of the ‘Clean Kerala Initiative’ project of Responsible Tourism Mission, Department of Tourism in association with Kerala Travel Mart Society will ensure that 225 tourism accommodation units in the state will become plastic free from January 1, 2020.

These accommodation units, including resorts, hotels, homestays and house boats have decided to exclude 19 plastic items like plastic carry bags, plastic tray, disposable cups, plastic bottles, plastic straw, plastic plates, plastic cups, cling film, thermocol, plastic bowls, plastic flags, plastic sheets used for food parceling, plastic spoons, fruit and vegetable punnets, plastic juice packets, PVC flex materials and food parceling plastic containers.

About 225 accommodation units across the state have already handed over the self-declaration form to RT Mission. All the hotels, resorts and home stays and 20 house boats in Kumarakom have joined hands with RT Mission in this venture and to become plastic free from Wednesday. (UNI)
