Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 31: A special session of Kerala Legislative Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution ratifying the Constitution (126th) Amendment Bill, which proposes to extend quota to SC/STs in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies by another 10 years.
The resolution moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan under Article 368 of the Constitution was passed unanimously as Opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and BJP's lone MLA O Rajagopal have supported it. The Bill, which has been passed by Parliament earlier, has to be ratified by at least 50 per cent of the State Assemblies before it is brought into force.
The reservation quota for SC/STs and Anglo Indian Community, given for the past 70 years in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, is due to end on January 25, 2020. The Assembly also passed a resolution under Rule 118 urging the Centre to amend the Constitution to continue the reservation for Anglo Indian Community in Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.
