KOCHI: Customs superintendent B Radhakrishnan, one of the main accused in the gold smuggling case in Thiruvananthapuram has been arrested. The police took him into custody while he was on his way to CBI office for interrogation in the gold smuggling case.
It is learnt that Radhakrishnan’s arrest will lead to some crucial evidence on violinist Balabhaskar’s death and his financial dealings.
There was a preventive detention order issued for the accused including Radhakrishnan in the gold smuggling case as per the directive of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence(DRI). Following this, Prakash Thamipi, coordinator of deceased violinist Balabhaskar, Sereena Shaji and Adv. Biju were arrested and lodged at the central jail in Poojappura. Other accused in the case, Vishnu Somasundaram and and B Radhakrishnan were absconding. CBI had launched a special probe on Radhakrishnan's part in the case and had served a notice at his house in this regard. On Thursday police arrested him while on his way to CBI office for interrogation in the case. He also was shifted to Poojappura central jail.
As he was arrested under preventive detention order, he would not be able to come out of jail for one year. He had tried to avoid preventive custody while he was in hiding. The CBI registered the case in between this.
With the arrest of Radhakrishnan, the investigating agencies believe that details of financial dealings of Balabhaskar with the accused in the gold smuggling case will be unearthed. Vishnu Somasundaram had told DRI that it was Balabhaskar who introduced him to Radhakrishnan.
