Ten young women pilgrims who reached Pamba on way to Sabarimala were sent back by the police on Saturday as the Mandala-Makaravilakku season started.
They were part of a team that came from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. Police verified their age based on documents and sent them back. This was on strict instructions from the Kerala Government that young women need not be allowed to make it the shrine. This, authorities said, was owing to confusion in the wake of the recent Supreme Court verdict referring a bunch of review petitions against the court's September 28, 2018, verdict allowing women in the menstruating age to worship at the shrine, to a larger Bench.
Reports said police spoke to the women and told them about the customs and traditions of the temple.
