Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 4 : A holiday has been declared for Government Offices and Educational Institutions here from the afternoon on Monday in view of 'Arattu' procession, official sources said.
The 'Arattu' procession marks the end of the Alpassi festival at the world famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple. A magnificent 'Aarattu' ceremony, the holy bath in the sea for the deities, is the primary attraction of the festival.
The ‘Arattu’ procession which begins from the temple in the evening will pass through the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport’s runway. During the period, the Airport will be closed for a few hours.
The ‘Pallivetta’ or royal hunt, which marks the ninth day of the festival, was held here on Sunday, with the head of the Royal family of erstwhile Travancore leading the proceedings.
A huge 'Arattu' procession will start from the temple and proceed towards Shanghumugham Beach, with the head of the Travancore Royal Family leading the procession and keeping a sword in the hand.
Thousands of faithful devotees will flock the streets to view this unique and historic sight, as deities will be escorted by caparisoned elephants, mounted police and columns of armed police. (UNI)
