Court stays cremation of Maoists killed in encounter till Nov 4

Agency News

Palakkad: The Palakkad District Sessions Court has ordered that the bodies of the four Maoists who were gunned down in an alleged encounter with Thunderbolt commandos in Manjakandi forest of Attappadi should not be cremated till November 4.

The direction was issued on Thursday in a petition filed by relatives of the deceased Maoists Manivasakam and Karthi. The Session court's direction came after relatives of Karthi and Manivasagan approached it to stop the bodies from being cremated until the post-mortem report is out.

The court also directed that proof of all formalities taken before the shootout was ordered and other details be produced before the court on November 2. The court will hear the petition of the relatives again on November 2.

The petitioners had stated that the Supreme Court guidelines on encounter deaths were not followed. The relatives demanded re-postmortem examinations if anything unusual is stated in the postmortem report. The bodies are presently kept at the Thrissur Medical College.

Meanwhile, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court directed authorities to allow Kala, widow of Manivasagan, and his relatives to see his body.

The order came in a petition moved by Kala, who is now jailed at Tiruchirappalli in another case.
