Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 24 : CPI (M) candidate VK Prasanth, who is also Mayor of City Corporation here, won the Vattiyoorkavu Assembly seat by a margin of 14,438 votes on Thursday. The voting for the bypoll was held on October 21 and the counting of votes was taken up at 0800 hrs this morning.
Mr Prasanth secured 54,782 votes and defeated his nearest rival K Mohan Kumar of Congress who had polled 40,344 votes, while BJP's Advocate S Suresh finished in third position by getting 27,425 votes.
Talking to newspersons here, Mr Prasanth termed his victory as unexpected and said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) always stands with the people who voted in favour of him.
The people rejected the caste factor and voted for the CPI-M candidate in the hustings, he added. (UNI)
