New Delhi, Sept 27: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Friday thanked the people of the Pala constituency in Kerala for reposing their trust in the Left Democratic the the after the Left ended the 54-year monopoly of Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Pala assembly constituency.
"Congratulations, Pala! For the first time in 54 years, we are humbled and grateful that the people have reposed their trust in the Left here", the CPI(M) leader tweeted moments after the Election Commission has declared the victory of NCP candidate Mani C. Kappan.
Mr Kappan has defeated his rival, Kerala Congress (M) candidate Jose Tom by 2,943 votes.
The Sharad Pawar-led NCP, though part of the UPA in the Centre, is an ally of LDF, a coalition led by CPM), in Kerala.
The BJP candidate N Hari secured a third position with a difference of around 35000 votes.
This is the first time in 54 years, that the Pala has elected an MLA other than from Congress-led UDF. The Kerala Congress (M) is a long standing ally of Congress in the state.
Earlier, veteran Kerala Congress leader and former Finance Minister KM Mani had represented the constituency. (UNI)
