Thiruvananthapuram: The BJP core committee meeting is said to have chosen senior leader Kummanam Rajasekharan for Vattiyoorkavu in the assembly by-election to be held on October 21. The confidential meeting was held on Sunday in Kochi.
The other candidates under consideration are K Surendran and Sobha Surendran, for Manjeshwar and Konni respectively. PK Krishnadas and Ravisha Tantri Kuntar are the two other names figured in for Manjeshwar. In Ernakulam, it could be AN Radhakrishnan, CG Rajagopal or B Gopalakrishnan.
The candidates’ list picked by the core committee will be sent to New Delhi for final clearance after getting the state NDA leadership’s approval.
Kummanam is not a new face in Vattiyoorkkavu. He had fought a lost battle in the 2016 assembly election, agaist K Muraleedharan (Cong) and lost by 7,622 votes. While fighting with Shashi Tharoor in Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha elections, Kummanam could succeed in cutting the Congress candidate’s lead to 2,836 in the Vattiyoorkavu assembly constituency. While Kummanam was hesitant to contest once again, the leadership of the BJP and RSS were keen on capitalising on the popularity of the veteran leader. Moreover, Kummanam has always been a soft choice of the sangh cadre.
The BJP leadership is trying to capitalise on the Ezhava factor in Konni this time by fielding Sobha. The constituency had backed Congress leader Adoor Prakash five times in the past. But the name of Surendran is also under consideration as he had given Congress candidate Anto Antony a strong battle in the constituency during the Lok Sabha elections.
