Kottayam, Sep 8: Jose Tom Pulikunnel, the Congress led UDF candidate for Pala byelection will contest the September 23 Assembly poll with the symbol of 'pineapple' and not the party's traditional ‘two leaves’.
The demise of Kerala Congress (M) founder K M Mani left Pala town without an MLA in April last. Mani, former finance minister, had represented the constituency since 1967, party sources said on Sunday.
The infighting in the two factions of KC (M) led by Jose K Mani, the only son of KM Mani and P J Joseph, close-aid of KM Mani, gained further momentum following the denial of the party symbol.
KC (M), the biggest constituent in UDF, has been facing trouble since the demise of K M Mani. The power struggle is between the party legislator Joseph and Jose K Mani for the post of chairman of KC (M).
As the working chairman of KC (M) Joseph refused to budge in the selection of candidate for the election, Jose K Mani announced the name of Jose Tom Pulikunnel as the candidate.
Jose had to file his nomination papers as an independent candidate when Joseph refused to issue a letter nominating Jose as the party candidate. The traditional two leaves symbol was not allotted to Jose who had to satisfy with pineapple symbol as an independent candidate.(UNI)
