Kozhikode, Sep 2 : Onam, the ten-day long annual festival of Malayalees got underway on Monday with the first floral carpet being laid in houses marking 'atham' day.
As the proverb goes, "atham pathonam" (ten onam from atham day) onam is celebrated marking the beginning of the month of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam Calendar. Hindu households lay 'pookalams' in their courtyards for ten days till Thiruvonam.
The festivities conclude with massive celebrations including s grand feast in the tenth day of Thiruvonam. The other festivities include folk dance like 'kaikottikali', 'onathallu' and special prayers in temples. (UNI)
