The Opposition, United Democratic Front has finally zeroed in on Tom Jose Pulikkunnel as its candidate for the Pala by-election, accepting Kerala Congress (Mani) working chairman PJ Joseph's opposition to a bid by Jose K Mani's bid to have his wife, Nisha as the candidate.
Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala announced the candidature of Tom Jose, bringing temporary truce. However, Joseph has made it clear that Tom had earlier been suspended by Joseph.
Joseph had earlier in the day made clear that winnability was to be a deciding factor and Nisha did not meet the quality.
He had made it clear that if there was a decision to put up Nisha, the party symbol would not be allotted to him. This forced even the UDF to reject any move to make Nisha the candidate.
Tom Jose had come into the Kerala Congress through student politics and was close to party founder late KM Mani. He had earlier said that he was willing to contest even as an Independent, but added that he would be allotted the party symbol.
Separately, BJP-led NDA is to announce its candidate tomorrow.
The ruling Left Democratic Front candidate Mani C Kappan has already filed his nomination.
