Director General of Police and former Vigilance Director Jacob Thomas, who has been under suspension for nearly two years, appears all set to return to service. On the basis of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) order, the Union Home Secretary has sent the file to the State Chief Secretary asking him to take action in the matter immediately. Though CAT had ordered cancellation of the suspension no action was taken. This forced Jacob Thomas to move a contempt petition to CAT which sought an explanation and forwarded to the file to the Chief Secretary.
There is likelihood of the Government reappointing him and not moving an appeal against the CAT order. Jacob, who had put the Government into a fix by being highly critical of its activities, had also written a book, further embarrassing it. Prior to the recent Lok Sabha elections he had put in his papers and there were strong rumours that he would be an independent candidate. However, his resignation was not acceptable by the Government. The matter was now with the Chief Minister to take a decision. Sources say Jacob Thomas might not be given any key post and the bureaucrat has said he would seek legal recourse.
