Versatile Sopanasangeetham exponent Janardhanan Nedungadi passed away on Wednesday. He was 90. Sopana Sangeetham is the song sung near the holy steps (sopanam) leading to the sanctum sanctorum of a temple.

His end came in the wee hours of Wednesday while undergoing treatment in a local hospital due to pneumonia. He was cremated at Guruvayur Municipality crematorium at 4 pm.

He was the Ashtapadi singer of Guruvayoor temple for the past 66 years. A strong follower of Guruvayoor Pani style of Sopana Sangeetham, Janardhanan Nedungadi had been conferred with Kendra Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi awards.

His entire life was dedicated for popularising the Guruvayur Pani style of Sopana Sangeetham. Sopana Sangeetham is a form of Indian classical music that developed in the temples of Kerala in South India in the wake of the increasing popularity of Jayadeva's Gita Govinda or Ashtapadis.
